Take part in a Manchester School of Art workshop this Summer

FEELING inspired? Over the summer Manchester School of Art are running a series of workshops for adults to work in different arts areas, from digital imagery, powder sculpture, weave through to mythical books.

Temporary Sculpture Workshop

Monday August 1, 10am – 4.30pm

Hannah Brown

£40 per person, materials included

Join experienced fine artist Hannah Brown this summer to explore sculpture. During the summer School you will have the opportunity to play with a variety of powder-based mediums, working both individually and collaboratively to create temporary artworks and small sculptures to take home.

Hannah completed her MA Fine Art from Manchester School of Art in 2013 and currently makes art at Bankley Studios and Gallery in Levenshulme. She use a variety of powder based materials such as fine casting plaster, activated carbon powder, ash, soot, flock and embossing powders to produce temporary sculptures and permanent 2D artworks.

Digital Artwork Workshop

Tuesday August 2 & Wednesday August 3, 10am – 4.30pm

Sophie Mahon

£40 per person, materials included

Join us for a practical and tech-based workshop with Artist Sophie Mahon. We will be exploring new ways of making and looking at art using unusual materials, processes and technology including drawing, sound, video and sculpture. The workshops will combine open source digital processes with messy, hand on making, exploring the theme of change and transformation. What happens when a drawing becomes sound and how does a video become a sculpture?

Collage, Zine and Storytelling Workshop

Thursday August 4, 10am – 4.30pm

Betsy Lamborn

£40 per person, materials included

Working with artist bookmaker, and zine maker Betsy delve into the world of mythical animals in Manchester. The session will develop skills in collaging, bookmaking and self-publishing. Betsy, the creator of the tiny wolves invasion in Stockholm will help you to realise your ideas creating a a zine (self-published magazine) based guide for Manchester’s unknown creatures. You will create collaged images of imagined creatures, and build up their background stories. These images will be transformed into a zine including maps of the city and helpful hints as to where to find them.

Weave, Dye and up-cycle Workshop

Monday September 1, 10am – 4.30pm

The Pom Pom Girls

£40 per person, materials included

Work with The Pom Pom Girls to get to grips with the basics of weave using a wide range of materials. With a treasure trove of exciting colours and textures you’ll dig in to learn how to weave by hand. You’ll combine second hand found embroidery threads with other textiles such as, wool, mohair and cottons with plastics to create your own yarns. From here you’ll go on to learn how to make your own dyed, patterned and printed fabrics to use within your weave. Using all the up-cycled fabrics you made you’ll end the day with a your own hand woven piece.
