This year, Manchester Metropolitan and The Union have organised a host of exciting events to welcome new and current students to our Manchester and Cheshire campuses so do share the information with your students or join us for some events.
Lewis Bartlett, President of The Union, said: “The first few weeks are some of the most exciting times you will have at university, and they’ll provide some of the most lasting memories.
“For me, Welcome Week was a fantastic starting point to get to know the University and Students’ Union. This year, there will be loads of events and activities taking place, so get involved and enjoy your time at Manchester Met.”
Plan your week
You can start to plan your first weeks at the University. Before arriving, you can go online and see what amazing events are on offer in both Manchester and Cheshire or when you arrive, pick up a Welcome Week Guide from a reception desk or Student Hub.
The Union and the University have planned loads of exciting events, including a film night, karaoke and ‘Rave of Thrones’ featuring Game of Thrones’ Hodor actor Kristian Nairn as DJ.
There is also help on hand for the academic, with workshops including academic writing, planning and budgeting.
And for the first time there will be a Street Food Market on Wednesday 21st and Thursday 22nd September on Lower Ormond Street, Manchester campus, where you will be able to grab some delicious street foods and also some non-food essentials for life as a student.
One of the biggest events in the Welcome programme is the Freshers’ Fair, taking place at the Manchester campus on Wednesday 21st September (Sports) and Thursday 22nd September (Societies), and at the Cheshire campus on Wednesday 21st September (Sports and Societies).
With loads of stalls, plenty of freebies and showcase performances, the fair is an opportunity to find out what there is on offer – new students can take part in a range of fun games and activities to help you make friends.
The fair is a great chance to meet our clubs and societies, find out more about what they do and sign up to the things that interest you.
Manchester Met and The Union have also produced a Welcome Week Guide, which includes a welcome events programme and information on how to get study ready. Look out for our Welcome Week badges worn by support staff – they are here to answer any queries!
Professor Malcolm Press, Vice-Chancellor of Manchester Met, says: “The North West is one of the greatest places in the country in which to be a student, and I am delighted to welcome all our new starters to both the Manchester and Cheshire campuses. This is one of the country’s largest and most diverse modern universities, and I am sure that your first weeks at Manchester Met will be just the start of a long and exciting journey.”
Join us on Facebook and Twitter for the latest on Welcome Week. Also, when you arrive on campus, you will be greeted by giant ‘WELCOME’ letters in All Saints Park, so snap a picture and share your memories of Welcome Week with us using the hashtag #NEWtoMMU.
Say Hello to Hulme (Manchester campus) – Tuesday 20th September, 10am-2pm
New students can stop by the Brooks Building on Tuesday 20th September to find out more about the neighbourhood of Hulme. It’s a chance to get to know the area, pick up freebies and discounts from local businesses or check out the best places to visit. Students can chat to local organisations about nearby venues, arts and cultural events plus how to access services and volunteering opportunities.
