Bus priority work adjacent to Manchester campus

During the month of October there will be increased activity in proximity to the campus as the works progress:

Oxford Road / Grosvenor Street / Cavendish Street Junction – A Permanent No Left Turn from Grosvenor Street, onto Oxford Road (Southbound) comes into effect from Thursday 20th October. Lane closures will also be implemented alongside pedestrian management to facilitate the traffic island removal and new build outs as part of the final scheme.

Colleagues may have noticed the recent works on Sidney Street / Grosvenor Street / York Street which have resulted in changes to the local waiting / loading restrictions.

Bus gate:

If you’re driving into the City, there is a permanent change to Oxford Road between Hathersage Road and Denmark Road which prioritises buses, bikes and pedestrians. The introduction of the bus gate means that general traffic must turn right at Hathersage Road when heading towards the City Centre between 6am and 9pm, 7 days-a week. From Monday 10th October, the City Council will be issuing penalty notices to all drivers contravening the bus gate via the operational camera enforcement

Booth Street / Oxford Road:

Due to bus priority works and neighbouring developments, there are currently lane restrictions in place on the approach to the Booth Street / Oxford Road junction. The bus priority works in this location started on Monday 19th September and are expected to finish at the end of October. TfGM’s Urban Traffic Control team are actively managing the timing of the temporary signals on a daily basis to help alleviate congestion, particularly in the morning and evening peaks. TfGM are working closely with the City Council to get these works completed as quickly and as safely as possible.

To enable resurfacing works, Oxford Road will again require it to be temporarily closed, between Hathersage Road and Booth Street, from Saturday 22nd October until Sunday 30th October. TfGM are undertaking the primary works during quieter periods to reduce disruption.

Brunswick Street:

From Monday 10th October, a permanent ‘No Entry’ restriction will be implemented at the junction of Brunswick Street and Oxford Road. This will prohibit all vehicles from turning into Brunswick Street from Oxford Road, however access will be maintained for cycles. The works to implement this change will include a temporary full closure of the junction from Friday the 14th October to Saturday 22nd October.

Oxford Street:

Work will start outside the Palace Hotel to introduce further cycle infrastructure. From Monday 10th October, northbound lane reductions will be in place between Charles Street and Whitworth Street, with the introduction of a southbound contraflow lane from Tuesday 18th October. Pedestrian management on the footways will be in place while the work is carried out.

Thanks you for your support and patience during the delivery of these works. It is advisable to plan your journey in advance and allow extra time for travel.
