Last week, Dr Gary James of the Dept. of Exercise and Sports Science, and Will McTaggart of the North West Film Archive, were invited by Manchester City to present rare archive footage of the club, preserved at the North West Film Archive, to staff at the City Football Academy.
Curated and presented by Gary and Will, ‘The Boys In Blue: Manchester City FC on Film’ has already played to sell-out crowds in the last few years, but this final screening at City’s Media Centre was watched by two particularly special guests.
Amongst the audience were former club captain, manager and coach Tony Book, together with ex-player, England international and current Club Ambassador Mike Summerbee, both of whom feature heavily in the collection of films that make up the show.
Will said: “We were delighted to have another opportunity to show off the range of footage in the North West Film Archive collections, from professional newsreels and television items to home movies produced by players and fans, to tell the story of the club during the Maine Road era. The insightful commentary by Gary enabled the audience to really appreciate and understand the significance of the material, and to have two club legends in the room watching themselves on screen made the evening particularly rewarding.”
The screening has helped to forge closer links between Manchester Metropolitan and Manchester City, with the club now hosting the inaugural International Football History Conference on 15th and 16th June 2017, which has been organised by Gary.
