Members of #McrMetProud swapped stories with Olympic champ Greg Rutherford at the launch of the Simplyhealth Great Manchester Run.
The five runners will be part of the University’s orange army tackling the 10k around the city centre streets on Sunday May 28.
They four staff members meeting the sports superstar were: Alan Cain, Head of Security and Business Continuity; Sean McDonagh, Resource Officer in Talent and Resourcing; Helena Tinker, Environment and Energy Systems Manager, and Emma Stothard, Communications and Engagement Officer. They were joined by student Jess Dyer.
Long jumper Greg, who topped the podium at London 2012, discussed his life as a globe-trotting athlete and exchanged hints and tips with the group today.
He said: “I think the Greater Manchester Run is a wonderful event and what we find in Manchester is that so many people come out and support runners.
“I’m really keen to make sure as many people as possible get involved.
“The best thing about doing it with a university is that there will be lots of people going through the same pains and problems and you have a bit more team spirit.”
Join the team!
More than 300 staff and students have signed up so far to join Team #McrMetProud but the elite athlete and Strictly Come Dancing star wants to see more of us on the start line.
Greg said: “The best thing is to have a goal, something that you can say: ‘I’m aiming for this’, rather than saying ‘I’m going to get fit’.
“From that, if you get the bug, you can then set yourself more goals.
“There’s nothing more rewarding than having your family, friends, colleagues and even random strangers cheering you on.
“It’s a wonderful experience.”
The meet-and-greet happened at the Cloud 23 sky bar at the Hilton Manchester Deansgate in the Beetham Tower.
