This seminar will outline the INSTEP project: Internationalising Student Education in Physiotherapy.

This project was a collaborative, student-centred International project between MMU and Turku University of Applied Sciences that aimed to enrich Physiotherapy curricula via a series of online classrooms and shared resources.

The presenters will outline how the online resources were developed and refined, sharing their experiences of working collaboratively to promote student education.

The use of online classrooms and resources will be considered and how these can be utilised to facilitate International distance learning.

Barriers and facilitators will be explored and a student participant will share her experiences of participating in the project.

Finally, the project team will highlight how the findings of this project might be utilised to shape future work within different institutions.


Deborah O’Connor, Manchester Met

Deborah O’Connor is a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Health Professions (Manchester Metropolitan University) and a Physiotherapist with over twenty years of clinical experience working with clients with neurological conditions.  Deborah joined MMU, initially as a Lecturer Practitioner in 2007 and then as a full time lecturer in 2009.  Deborah has a specialist interest in the area of technology enhanced learning and International collaboration.

Esa Barlund, TUAS

Esa joined the Faculty of Health and Wellbeing (Turku University of Applied Sciences, Finland) in 2015 as a full-time lecturer in Physiotherapy. Previously he worked for 15 years as PT lecturer in applied university. Esa has clinical expertise in the field of neurological rehabilitation and physiotherapy. Also, he is member of the Finnish ICF (International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health, WHO) educator network. Additionally, Esa has enjoyed being a national GAS (Goal Attainment Scaling) educator since 2011.

Candiss Warder, Physiotherapy student at Manchester Met

Candiss is a second year Physiotherapy student who participated in the INSTEP project.
