Manchester Metropolitan has this year again hosted the North West Final of Debating Matters, the UK-wide sixth form debating competition.
Loreto College, from Manchester, has won the National Final but this was no surprise to the organisers at the University, as we were proud to host the North West Regional Final at the Brooks Building in March this year which Loreto duly won to earn a place in the National Final in London.
Ken McLaughlin, from the Department of Social Care and Social Work, said: “The Debating Matters competition is an excellent opportunity for young people to engage with, and argue for, political and social policy issues of relevance in contemporary society.
“It is extremely pleasing to see a local college win the prestigious national final and our congratulations go to all the Loreto debaters and their teacher/coach Fran Tattersall.”
Fran said: “I’m absolutely delighted with the result and I’m exceptionally proud of my students. We’ve competed in the competition for nine years and have never made the final. It feels like a dream!”
